OFF-SEASON JOLLEY BRIDGE SURVEY
MARCO ISLAND, Fla. (Aug. 1, 2007) – Marco Island drivers were surveyed as part of data collection for the SS Jolley Bridge needs assessment. This was the second phase of a survey effort that began in March 2007 to determine traffic patterns and driving habits.
Surveys were distributed only to drivers stopped at the traffic signal at North Collier Boulevard (SR 951) and North Barfield Drive, to avoid traffic delays. Each driver was asked one quick question and was handed a survey to be completed and returned by mail. Postage was prepaid, and surveys were returned by August 20, 2007.
“This survey provided an insight into how the bridge is currently used, and the community’s assistance was greatly appreciated,” said Brandy Otero, a transportation planner with Collier Metropolitan Planning Organization. “We know that there was great interest in how improvements might be financed. The survey, however, focused only on the characteristics of the traffic using the bridge.”
Survey distribution was not continuous, but resulted in a random sampling of drivers. Participation was entirely voluntary. To thank participants, returned surveys were entered into a contest to win a $250 prize provided by the survey consultant. One winner was randomly chosen in September from the completed surveys.
This survey provided off-season data to complement the peak season statistics collected last March. The data helped to determine what improvements may be needed for the Jolley Bridge.
